Introducing the World’s Biggest Lap Dog Samson! Samson is a 6 year old purebred Alaskan Malamute. If you’re looking for a ball of fluff to keep you warm this winter, Samson’s the dog for you. He is a sweet boy who loves to snuggle. Samson came into rescue through no fault of his own when his owner fell on some very hard times and couldn’t keep him. Samson was an only-dog at his former home but he gets along well with the other dogs in his foster home and has not tried to be the alpha dog. He would do great as an only dog or with another dog close to his age. He outgrew the hyper puppy stage long ago and gets annoyed when his foster siblings go into crazy wresting mode and prefers to hang out alone outside until they’re done playing. He’s never been around cats. Most malamutes have a high prey drive so he would do best in a home without cats. Until he came into rescue, he spent his entire life outdoors but he is quickly adapting to life as a house dog. He had a few potty accidents the 1st week he was here but he caught on to house breaking very quickly. Like all malamutes, he sheds a LOT. Fortunately he loves to be brushed. In the spring and fall he will blow his coat. There will be 2 or 3 weeks of HEAVY shedding. But after he’s done blowing, he won’t shed much until it’s time to blow again. Never shave a malamute. If you do, they can get heat stroke. Their fur helps keep them cool in the summer, just like the insulation in your house helps with the AC in the summer as well as the heat in the winter. Samson needs to lose a few pounds. His ideal weight is around 90 lbs. His favorite treats are carrots and ice cubes so he’s a cheap date. Since he was a full time outdoor dog at his last home, he has separation anxiety when left alone in the house. He does fine when left alone in his outdoor kennel or if he has another dog to keep him company in the house. I think he will get over the anxiety once he gets used to being an indoor dog. He is a typical malamute and loves to pull. He pulls really hard when you walk him with the leash attached to his collar. I recommend using a no-pull harness unless you want arms like the Hulk. He would make a great skijor buddy if you aren’t looking to win any races. He’s more of a slow & steady kind of dog than a speed demon. He’s also learning how to pull a wagon so he can utilize some of that drive to pull. Samson loves everyone he meets, especially kids. He would do best in a home with older kids because forgets how big he is and might knock little kids over. Sampson does not do well with people he does not know in his face. He needs to be the one to come to you and feel safe. He would do best in a home with no kids or older children.
