"Meet Katana! We’ve had the utmost pleasure of being her foster since she arrived in rescue mid-February. Katana, along with her brother, were the only two puppies that survived a litter 10 after the mother rejected them, then were surrendered after improper care by the breeder. To us, she’s our little miracle baby! She is 100% blind in her left eye and saw a specialist to determine that, along with complete health/vision in her right eye. This happened while attempting to nurse and was nipped by her mom. Despite the lack of vision in one eye, Katana is a well-rounded, healthy puppy discovering the world around her! She does suffer some neurological issues, which are demonstrated in her leaning, sometimes tipping/falling over, circling at times, and other behaviors; however, this does not hold her back and we've noticed the occurrence is decreasing over time (this is believed to have been the result of improper nutrition by the breeder after not being able to nurse from her mom). Katana’s getting the hang of potty-training with some work yet to go. She does learn from our resident dogs (and knows what she needs to do outside) who don’t mind showing her the ropes. During the day she is in her crate, next to our Lab who is in his crate. She almost always has a potty accident while in there during the day, sometimes poop, too. At night, she sleeps in bed with us – sleeps soundly through the night – and wakes promptly to eat breakfast (she LOVES food-time) after going outside. She is a heat-baby, wanting to be snuggled under the covers and/or next to one of our resident dogs. She loves to play with other dogs and has the cutest prance/hop when she runs! Katana arrived to rescue with a fuzzy baby blanket, which she kneads and sucks on prior to any nap and always before going to bed (sometimes falls asleep with it in her mouth even). This blanket will most definitely go with her to her forever home! In doing a little research, I learned this is a behavior comparable to thumb-sucking in human children, which helps calm and sooth them. When out-and-about, I’m often asked, “What breed is she?” and it’s a 50/50 between a surprised expression and an, ‘I thought so,’ when I share she’s a Doberman. She doesn’t have the traditional brown/black markings like her brother, rather she appears all-black, which I read is very rare. When you get up-close you can see some brown on her face and feet/legs. We’ve been able to bring Katana up to our cabin a few times and she travels exceptionally well in the vehicle, just curls-up and sleeps in her baby bed (with her baby blanket and a squeaky, stuffed kangaroo to chew until being lulled back into a slumber). She does get excited/barks when she sees people while in the vehicle (i.e., gas station fuel-up, etc.), but that is something easily trained-out. Katana does know how to ‘sit,’ is learning ‘down,’ as in lay-down, ‘no bite,’ and is learning ‘back’ on a leash, so she’ll walk at-pace with you, rather than ahead. While with us she has learned how to go up and down the stairs, though she’s still gaining confidence with ‘down,’ especially on stairs that have a more narrow run, are steep, or have numerous steps. This girl is a total gem and I’ve delayed creating this bio, as I just don’t want to give her up, yet I know she deserves to find that perfect forever family that’ll give her the best life, as that’s all she deserves – the best of everything. If you think she could be a fit for you, please submit an application and let’s meet!” Kantan's adoption fee includes: full veterinary exam, spay, prepaid microchip, dewormer, Rabies vaccine, Distemper combo vaccine, bordetella vaccine, flea/tick and heartworm preventative while in rescue.
