Hi, I’m Gilbert, but my friends call me Gil.

I moved to another foster, who has a really nice resident dog named Bear.  Foster Poppa calls him Professor Bear, because he’s teaching me and my foster brother, Miko, how to puppy.  He helped me understand doors aren’t as scary as I thought.  I’m still a little tentative at sometimes, but if you give me a little space, I do pretty well and getting better all the time.  We have also completed basic and advanced classes on stick and tug.  We even get all 3 of us on the same stick and rope.  I love running with my friends and rolling in the leaves.  Poppa said I’m doing really well on our walks and appreciates that I don’t pull on the leash like Bear does (oops, please don’t tell Bear I said that).  Bear has also showed me it’s ok to stay in my kennel and be calm when my humans have to leave us at home.   Poppa has 2 cats.  It took a while, however I showed them I won’t hurt them and now they let me nap on the bed beside them.  Poppa was pretty shocked when he saw us because I guess they don’t like most dogs.

My sister, mom and me were dumped on a farm, so I do have some concerns about being left, and do follow my family around the house when they leave the room.  I love to snuggle at poppa’s feet while he works.

I warm up to ladies right away, and I do ok with new men when outside where there is plenty of space.  However, I am protective of the ladies in my family, especially if she and I are sitting/laying down and a new guy stands above her and me.  With some patience, I will learn to love the guy.  I was that way with poppa at first and within a few days we became best friends.

I have bright blue eyes, and my cocoa brown fur really helps to set them off.  I have a white “rub here” spot on my chest and chin, and 4 whites paw tips.  I am learning come and we are working more on me being a calm puppy and keeping my feet on the floor, instead of tricks like shake and roll over.

More than anything, I hope to find a family that can look past the word “pit mix” and see the playful snuggly husky in me.

Poppa here.

Wow, what a transformation.  As Gil mentioned, at first, he got a little too protective when he and my wife were sitting on the couch and I walked in being above them, or he felt trapped.  First few times he growled at me to back off.  However, after 6-10 approaches and me being the one to give treats and feed him, he realized this human isn’t going to hurt anyone and he started rolling over for belly rubs when I walked up.  Our hunch is he or his previous family was miss-treated by a guy, so he will need some patience to earn his trust.  But wow, once earned, how he bonded to me was amazing.   The important thing is to be patient, be aware and take that particular situations slow. And he did not growl at me in any other situations, even when my wife and I were both giving him a bath shortly after he arrived.  I would be glad to answer any questions/help you figure out introducing me, if you would like.

Ok, enough of the negative.  And that is the only issue Gil has.  He is super smart.  Within a couple days he learned to ring the bell to outside.  This from a dog terrified of going through doors when he arrived.  The only accidents inside where when he first arrived when he got really scared.  When he first arrived, if I put his collar and leash on he would flatten himself to the floor and I had to carry him outside.  With a few positive experiences, he learned that putting on his leash leads to good things and now happily walks outside.  He is a gentleman on walks.  He takes a little convincing to get into the car, but rides well in the passenger seat or kennel.

Gil did great when we added Miko, our other foster dog, about a week after Gil arrived.  They are both just over a year old and play together like brothers all day.  I think Gil would love a home with another dog to play with.  He does well with our cats, he likes to follow them around some, but doesn’t chase and is a gentleman when he gets close to them.  Our cats barely tolerate Bear who they have lived with for 5 years, so them sleeping near Gil was a shock.
