“A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.” Quote by Josh Billings | ||||
Beagle / Mixed (short coat) : : Female : : Adult : : Medium
Meet Zia. She’s a sweet beagle that came to Minnesota with her puppies so that each could find a forever home. Zia is very friendly and loves petting and attention. We have had a number of people over to help meet and socialize her puppies and Zia has greeted them all enthusiastically. She also likes to snuggle on the couch -she’d love to be a lap dog but my lap is reserved for the cat so she has had to make due snoozing beside me when we watch TV. Zia has a lot of young dog energy. She loves to chase and wrestle with one of my beagles, chase balls thrown in the yard (she has not learned the concept of fetch yet) and she loves long walks where she can explore the world with her nose (however she does pull a lot on the leash so she would benefit from a harness or training on a Gentle Leader or similar). She would love friendly, playful canine companionship, whether in the household or on play dates. True to her scent hound genes, she also loves exploring. She tried to squeeze out through a gap around the back yard gate and squeezed through a cat door into the basement so you’ll want to make sure you have measures in place to foil an escape. She will bark at other dogs and people when confined behind a fence or in a pen and while this has decreased somewhat as she settles in and gets familiar with her surroundings, I do have an anxious, barky beagle and she has enjoyed participating in the run to the fence line to bark passing dogs with him. She also barks at other dogs when walking on a leash. In addition to my two beagles I have two cats. Zia and the cats have done fine together. One is shyer and doesn’t come out of the ‘dog free zone’ much but the other cat will come sit on my lap when Zia is napping next to me and my dogs and Zia has done fine. One night their backs were even touching. She knows her name and will usually come when called. She is generally house trained and has done great on a schedule. When I am not able to supervise her during the day, she will snooze in an open sided kennel in my home office with breaks every couple hours. I have also kenneled her up to 3 ½ hours so far when I have had to leave the house and she has done fine. She will benefit with kenneling when unsupervised until she learns the rules of the household. At night she does sleep on the bed with me and my two other dogs. She is a sound sleeper and will sleep up to 8 ½ hours without the need to go out. We are just starting on commands. I asked her to sit and she sat up and begged so it appears that she had some training at one time. She would love a forever home where she could get attention, training, exercise and snuggle time.
