“A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.” Quote by Josh Billings | ||||

A southern gentleman, Renaldo (Renn/Renny/Renn-Roo/Roo) is as sweet & gentle as he is handsome and he's such a good boy considering his previous situation! He has been let out on a regular basis and has gone at least 8 hours without any accidents, while he is kept company by the music or tv that his foster mom leaves on for him, and the resident dog. He is so well-behaved that there has been no need for him to be kept in his kennel, but he gets fed in there anyway using the words "kennel up." He goes in readily and waits patiently to be released. As far as other commands go, he seems to have grasped "sit" and continues work with "off" when he jumps up on a person or is curious about something above his eye level, and "down" for laying down. His foster mom is also working with him on "leave it" when he encounters a squirrel, cat, bunny, etc. on walks. The challenge has been getting him to focus on his training because he gets so excited about the reward! Renn is pretty mellow when it comes to the heat, but at this point is still moderately active and loves to take a stroll for a couple of miles or so, at the cooler points of the day. His foster mom expects that he will be more energetic once the temps start dropping into his comfort zone and can only imagine how excited he will be when he experiences snow! His occasional but hilarious "zoomies" are an indicator of how much fun he will probably have! He is also just starting to play with toys. His face is an expression of pure joy when he has his "zoomies" and can carry and toss a favorite "stuffie" around. He's also taken a liking to settling down with a bone, and in this heat, pup-cups are the bomb! He is pretty good on a leash, but will suddenly lunge with excitement if he sees the aforementioned squirrel, bunny, etc. so hang on! Again, he's a work in progress and has been doing much better with the "leave it" command when his foster mom can get his attention. Renn also loves hanging out and wandering the fenced back yard and is happy relaxing on the deck while policing the squirrels or trying to catch flies. He is very stealthy and can easily sneak past you if you're going out a door or a gate, so care needs to be taken to keep him in his yard or house. That behavior has improved when his foster mom puts out her hand and uses the commands "stay" or "wait." Otherwise he is well-behaved outdoors. So far, no digging or attempts at jumping the fence, but it's recommended that you keep an eye on him if the fence is lower than 6ft since he did once try looking over a 4ft fence. He was caught right away and redirected, so it is unknown if he would've attempted to go over. He is tolerant of being on a tie-out, but really does prefer to be free to explore and to move in-and-out of the shade at-will. When it's really hot, he has no qualms about going back inside to enjoy some air-conditioning with his person! Indoors, if excited about something, he will occasionally go up and/or over furniture, rather than around it, and has taken his foster mom by surprise with a leap over the couch! He has also been caught with his feet on the edge of the counter (again, we're working on "off") so preventive measures will need to be taken to prevent counter-surfing. He doesn't love bathes, but grudgingly settles down and takes it like a champ. Don't let that bit of water-resistance fool you though! Renn has been on a couple of camping trips with his foster mom & the resident dog, and loved taking a dip in the water. Especially the cooler, moving waters in the channel between the lakes. Renn would've stayed in there all day if his foster mom would've let him! He's recently shown a liking for deep puddles too! Renn has been great with the resident dog, but is indifferent to dogs in general, as long as they don't display any aggression toward him. When he has reacted, his foster mom thinks it's more of a protective issue than it is aggression toward the other dog. Regardless, that indifference leads his foster mom to believe that he might prefer to be an only dog. He does get jealous of the resident dog and butts in on any affection that's not directed at him. He just wants all of the love! He's quite fond of the very dog-savvy, resident cat and takes every opportunity to try to play with him. He chases the cat with playful intent, but pays attention when warned that enough is enough...though he still might bark at it. Overall, he really is a "people dog" and wants to be near his foster mom whenever possible - but not in any way that's annoying. Every now-and-then he lets out a charming vocalization when he is excited about something (like dinner) or when he's really wanting some attention. It's so sweet! His foster mom readily allows him to sit near her or even sometimes on her, as well as sleep on the bed with her so she can spoil him with pets, scritches, chest & belly rubs. He loves them so much he'll either fall asleep on his back, or paw at her for more. As far as children go, he's not a huge dog, but he is strong & extra-friendly, so any kids near him should be very stable on their feet. He's such a love-bug he may unintentionally knock a small person over. Renny did come into foster with teeth that required a little extra care. His foster mom has been giving him a daily dental treat which has improved things significantly for him, and as far as food goes, he has done best with a premium wet food mixed with a little warm water, and some premium kibble stirred in. Going forward, his foster mom believes the dental treats and regular brushings of his teeth will be necessary. Renaldo is just the bestest dog. He really loves being out in nature, so a moderately-active, out-doorsy person or family that will take him on many adventures would be ideal! His foster mom takes him everywhere she possibly can, and he is so adored by her that he is showered with love and affection. He would be so happy to continue to get that level of attention from his forever person or family, for the rest of his life! How could you not fall in love with this beautiful boy and his killer-blue eyes?!
