Hi! My name is Samantha, but my foster mom calls me Sam or Sammy. My bio is long because my she wants to make sure you know I'm a very quirky girl who's looking for the absolutely perfect furever family! I'm about 2 years old and a compact 35 lbs. I used to live in Kentucky with a whole bunch of other dogs. Mama calls it a hoarding situation and says I was probably in survival mode all of the time, and that's why I never learned to be a regular dog. All I know is I'm a very happy girl, and I love getting good food, treats, playtime, and adventures! Now I'll let my foster mom tell you more about me — Sammy's early life wasn't easy and she’s looking for a fresh start! Sammy is a fairly clean slate with tons of potential. She will require an extremely confident yet patient, gentle, and compassionate family/person with a really good sense of humor. Sammy is so sweet and good-natured, but she needs help when it comes to her skill set. She is potty-trained, but her cues to let you know that she needs to go out are subtle, so you have to pay attention to her to avoid an accident. She has learned to “sit” and is an expert at "down" (as in "lay down") as long as treats are in-hand, and she is getting much better at understanding “no” and her recall training. She's still working on grasping the concept of "off." Kennel training has been a big challenge, but she does go in willingly for meals, and has learned to sit and wait to eat until released with an “Ok.” She's also making progress spending short periods of time in it as long as she has a frozen kong treat to keep her busy, but it should be noted that she has made mind-boggling escapes from it. Alternatively, when kept confined to a room with the resident dog, she is usually calm and quiet. She’s fairly good on a leash, but does tend to pull and wander. She's also pretty good in the car (sometimes a little whiny) and in the bath (doesn't love them, but tolerates them.) Overall, Sammy has done well with most dogs, but she must be properly introduced. If they were dog-friendly cats, she'd be in heaven, as she absolutely LOVES the dog-savvy resident cat. Sammy does sometimes experience separation anxiety when she's not by her person and can make a bit of a fuss, so having a canine companion or a very dog-friendly cat might be ideal for her. Otherwise, she'd probably do well with a family that has somebody home all the time, or a person who can take her along on daily adventures. Generally, Sammy is shy and wary, but friendly with humans. However ,she has show herself to be uncomfortable in some social situations with larger groups of people or dogs and recently, has become vocal and reactive when it comes to strangers approaching. She's done ok with gentle, older kids when approached slowly. She tends to greet people by jumping up on them (always a work in progress), so her humans need to be stable on their feet. Sammy can also be overly-enthusiastic when it comes to food and treats, and though she has improved greatly when it comes to being patient and taking treats nicely, be sure to watch your fingers! And stay alert! Sometimes when she thinks nobody is watching, she likes to counter surf or go up, on, and over things when you least expect it. And unfortunately, she's a poop-eater. But if you keep her yard clean and keep a close eye on her on walks, or when other animals are around, it's manageable. I can't emphasize enough how vigilance is key and necessity with this girl! Lastly, on several occasions, when Sammy has seen a small animal, she gets very excited and will extend a lead (or leash) to it's max, wriggle like a fish out-of-water, until either her collar/harness releases, or her body slams to the ground hard enough to daze her. That combined with how springy she is create a recommendation for a fenced yard for her.  She’s  not all trouble and action though, and does  settle down nicely with a bone or snuggling up   with her mama, the resident dog and the cat.  Sammy may be a little naughty now and then, but she is still such a very good dog and she has an amazing heart! Sammy aims to please, and she is just so sweet and adorable. Once she is comfortable, she is all joy. She deserves to be completely spoiled and loved to pieces. She will definitely bring laughter and love into your life!
