Akari is a young lab mix born approx. 4/9/22 who was found wandering as a stray on a reservation.  Someone reported an abandoned, injured dog that was being hurt by other dogs and people.  She walked with a limp and appeared to have some problems with one of her hips.  The local temporary rescue brought her to safety and had a local veterinarian and foster provider help manage her pain until a permanent rescue could be found.

NDLB was able to immediately bring her into the rescue.  With the help of her reservation foster, Akari’s new NDLB foster learned quickly that, despite her pain and poor treatment from humans and dogs alike, Akari loves everyone – she is wonderful with adults, children, dogs and even cats.  She already knew some basic commands.  She is also completely potty trained and has impeccable house manners.

Akari was seen by our veterinarian, who recommended surgery on her hip and leg.  Since she is still likely growing, this surgery was her best option for resuming the active life that every dog deserves.  It is believed that Akari was hit by a car at some point without receiving treatment for her injuries.

Her surgery went well.  She is currently working on a physical therapy program and is expected to gain much of her mobility back with time.  Despite some pain that is being managed with medication, she is a very happy, playful pup who gets along with all of the dogs and cats in her foster home.

Akari walks very well on a leash.  Her physical therapy involves lots of slow walks to gain strength in her rear left leg.  She enjoys this time very much.  Once she is tired, she loves to curl up next to her favorite human on the sofa, or with one of the other pups in her foster home.

Akari will enter and quietly rest in her crate if desired, but her foster didn’t find it necessary most of the time.  She rides well in a car, but does sometimes make some soft whimpering sounds while travelling.  She will continue working on this.

She has met children as young as 4 years old and has done well with them.  Once her injuries are healed, we think she may do well with kids of any age.  She truly is a sweetheart who loves everyone she meets and has a special place in the hearts of everyone who has met her as well.  After all she has been through, this sweet girl deserves to find a family worthy of all the love she has to give.  Will she choose you?
