“A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.” Quote by Josh Billings | ||||

*2 week update* Kai's shell is cracking and falling off more and more each day as he becomes more comfortable in our home. He has started to come around and seek a little bit of attention from my roommate, but he still prefers me. He will engage in what I call gentle play with one of my fosters - basically just pawing at each other and play biting, but if it gets too feisty he will back off and gets uncomfortable. He definitely does better with calmer small dogs and doesn't mind calmer big dogs that give him space. I think he's afraid of being stepped on, so when one of my bigger dogs is being too crazy in his general area he tends to give off a pretty sharp warning bark to let them know they need to back off. He's also starting to play with toys and chew on bones, but he only does this when he's the only dog that has access to the them. He's eating much better now and also has a super cute personality that I'm honored to see more of. He spent the first several days here shaking a lot with his tail tucked between his legs, clearly uncomfortable and uncertain. Now he prances around with his tail up and his head held high! He will not instantly be your best friend, but with just a little bit of time he will thank you tremendously with lots of love and cuddles. By the way - his fur was very matted so he's shaved part way down his tail all the way up most of his neck. His fur will definitely require frequent brushing to ensure that his coat stays healthy. He's not used to being rushed exactly, I'm not sure he ever was, so I typically have to give him something to chew on in order for him to let me brush around his head. Honestly a finger has worked the best so far which sounds silly but he's relatively gentle so it doesn't bother me personally. His play style revolves around throwing paws and being mouthy so this is not surprising! He thinks brushing is playtime too.
Let me introduce you to the shy Kai! He’s a maltese/poodle mix born 1/23/2020. He's a breeder release so he needs a little extra patience and TLC. He took to me pretty quickly and has decided I am his person, so he's my little shadow and does tend to get upset if he can't follow me everywhere. He is crate trained however, because he's spent most of his life in a small crate, he hopes to never have to step inside one again. Due to Kai being a scared little dude, he prefers to not go outside, but thankfully he's potty pad trained and does pretty well at using them. He also doesn't chew on things he shouldn't, so he has been allowed to be left out when I am out of the house and all he does is curl up on the couch or recliner for a good nap. He is dog friendly with all sizes, but definitely prefers people more. In the week he has been with us he hasn't shown any interest in playing with my dogs, but he does like to play bow at me as well as my cats - he loooves cats! He's kid friendly but because of his nervousness it will take him a while to warm up - it seems like he picks his person and everyone else doesn't seem to matter. I feel like if he spent time with additional people outside of myself he would warm up to them as well though. He sleeps curled up next to me in bed. Boy oh boy does he get the zoomies in the morning! He prances around like the little prince that he is. He's a sweet little guy that just needs a loving and patient home that will give him the time to flourish! Is that you?
