Hi, my name is Othello, I am a jolly good fellow. Sorry, I know that was corny, but poppa said if I tell you to sing it to the "I Like Beer" song, my name will be stuck in your head.

But, I really am jolly. I love playing with all the other foster dogs at home and at training, and I'm always up for some ear scritches from my humans.

My litter arrived in rescue without our mom, so there are a few social things I'm still figuring out.  Thankfully, my foster sister was recently a mom and now that her puppies have moved out she's taken me under her wing. So, I'm getting more comfortable meeting new humans and learning to read other dogs I meet and adjust my energy appropriately. I still bark when meeting, mostly out of excitement, but it might be a tad scary for little kids, so I would probably do better with adults and older kids. I get really excited about my cat friend and sometimes I try to chase her because I just want to play, but my foster mom is showing me how to appropriately interact with cats and when to give them their space.

I’m a super quick learner and already know the commands for sit, shake, wait, leave it and kennel. I’ve really learned to love my kennel and to see it as a safe space for when I’m feeling sleepy or overwhelmed and will often go in there just to lay down when the door is open. My foster mom also says I sleep through the night in my kennel without a peep, that is until I hear you wake up in the morning because it’s time to PLAY! I’ve been working hard on my potty training and learning to sit by the back door when I need out, so I am doing well when on a schedule.

Poppa here.  It's still in your head, isn't it? Othello really is a sweet, jolly fellow, and smart. There was a very scared dog at training and Othello kept approaching her, adjusting his energy every time she gave him the stink eye. Before long, she was responding to him and playing with him. Maybe it's one of those "you had to be there things" but we were so proud of how well he read the other dog and adapted. He is still nervous about getting pets from new people, but he is doing so much better. He does warm up to people after a few minutes, but he will need a human who will advocate for his space and be ok with him not wanting to meet every person. That said, we took him to Night To Unite and he didn't have any bad reactions to anyone, he just shied away from most strangers.

He is a little mouthy at times, but that's just him playing with us like dogs play, and we are working on that. There is never any pressure when he mouths, not even when playing with the other dogs.
