Meet Pig Newton an adorable terrier mix with a big personality who traveled to Minnesota with his siblings to find their forever homes. He loves snuggling on laps, comfortable beds, and warm spaces. He also likes exploring his environment and playing with toys of all kinds. He is not afraid to take on toys almost as big as he is! Shoes, boots, socks, and small hazards like ribbons, pens, and rubber bands are also of great interest so he will do best in a home where he can have a safe secured play area when he’s not closely supervised.
He is small and very cold-sensitive, so we have been working on house-training him to use puppy pads as any trips out to the deck have been met by shrieks of protest. He is making good progress on this and will often run over proactively to use the pads but will need continued patience and encouragement. As he has gotten bigger and put on a little more weight, he has gone outside on the deck for some shorter exploratory outings when it has been in the 20’s and warmer. Currently, he sleeps in a kennel placed on his foster mom’s bed since he is not a fan of sleeping alone but he will settle down if he is close to others. When he gets bigger and has solid house training, he would probably love to sleep next to his people or a resident dog. He has
generally been able to sleep at least 4-6 hours at night without needing to relieve himself. He has been kenneled for up to a couple of hours if his foster needs to take the other dog on a walk or run errands. Otherwise, for longer periods, he has been in a secure dog pen with high sides. He will protest at first and has quite the loud protest shriek, something to consider if you have shared walls, but will quiet down shortly after you leave. We give him a Kong or a puppy teething chew before leaving which occupies him and minimizes protests. He currently lives with a 20-pound middle-aged terrier and the two of them wrestle and chase each other but Pig Newton has a lot more energy so he would be happy to have another active playmate or a more active household. Note however that he does like to be the dog in charge.
He eats in a separate place from the resident dog, or he will try to take his food. He also gets the prime spot on the dog bed in front of the radiator. He lives with 2 cats and will try to play with them so a dog-savvy cat would probably be best.
We have been working on socialization and he has been meeting a variety of family, friends, and neighbors. He is very outgoing and has loved everyone that he has met so far-adults (both women and men), teenagers, and children over the age of 8. He was a little afraid of smaller children – perhaps because those he has met were a little afraid of him – so this is an area where both will need help and supervision.
Pig Newton would love a forever home with warm laps and beds, help with training, and someone to play with him!
