This is Oreo and he is one smart cookie! He's thought to be a Collie/Heeler mix born approx. 8/14/21. He's also incredibly sweet. He was picked up as a stray with his brother somewhere in South Dakota. Very shy and timid around humans at first but wants affection and willing to trust if you go slow. We are so impressed with his ability to learn new things quickly. Most notably, he figured out how to let us know that he needs to go outside to potty. He will ring the bells with his nose, whine, or give a little one woof bark at the door. He's only been with us a few short days but so far, no accidents. He has also learned the words "kennel up." I know this because when I say them he runs away from me. He loved the crate at first when he was adjusting to his new environment but it's not his favorite place to be anymore so we are working on getting him to go in on his own when the command is given. Once in there though, he settles down pretty quickly and sleeps through the night, No issues when he has to spend time in there when we are gone but we haven't had to leave him alone for more than 4-6 hours at a time. Oreo is a pretty typical puppy with lots of curiosity and energy for chewing, fetching balls in the backyard or playing with his toys. He loves to bring the ball back for praise and attention. Inside, he spends most of his time chewing or napping and can occupy himself for a couple of hours on the floor with a variety of toys for chewing and metal stimulation. He doesn't love the leash, however, and runs away when I take it out. We have walked a little and he seems to enjoy it. He loves to be outside but walking with a human partner attached to a leash is still strange to him and is something that needs work. He's made himself at home in most areas of the house but is still afraid to follow me downstairs to the basement and upstairs to the second floor. Going up and down the stairs on the deck to the backyard is just fine though. There are no cats or other dogs here but he loved meeting the neighbor dog and would most likely love a playmate to wrestle around with. When excited, he gets a little jumpy and mouthy and is frightened by loud noises and loud voices so precautions will need to be taken around small children. Still so much to learn and experience for this puppy. The right family for Oreo is gentle, active, patient, and will make his socialization a priority.
