Hello. My name is Amira and I am a Golden Retriever born in 2018. I don’t know how to be much of a dog quite yet but my foster family is being really patient and loving me just the same. They say I’m really pretty and sweet. As long as you’re patient with me, I promise I’ll get the hang of things. I came from a breeder so I’m pretty scared, nervous, and unsure about all people and everything really. If kids are wanting to pet me, I prefer to have them be calm, quiet, and come to me slowly while I have a safe person hanging on to my leash as I am still getting used to people in general. I haven’t had much interaction with children, but I do like them and am curious about them. I’m not very treat or food motivated but I’m starting to take treats from hands. At first, I had to be carried up and down the stairs and outside and I wouldn’t move with a leash on, but now I’m walking up and down the stairs on my own with no problem! My foster parents are working with me on getting used to being on a leash and walking around the yard and going on walks with me with 2 leashes on in case I try to get away. Leashes aren’t my favorite thing. It’s easiest to get my leashes on me slowly and if I’m in my kennel but I’ve been getting used to them once I have them on. I’ve had a handful of accidents in my foster home and I’m not sure why because I’ve also gone potty outside many times and get treats and praise when I do so. My foster family and I are working on this and my accidents are becoming less frequent. I’m not a huge fan of being outside on a longer cable right now as when I pace, I pace in circles and my tie out always gets shorter. Don’t worry, I never get dizzy though, but I do get a bit nervous and scared, especially if I’m not being supervised and try escaping. Maybe once I’m more acclimated to my surroundings and feel more safe and secure I’ll be okay with it. I’ve been known to pace a lot but as I’ve become more comfortable I’ve enjoyed relaxing on the floor in the same room as my family. I like my kennel at night and when my foster family isn’t home. I feel safe there. Sometimes I get restless in my kennel and let out soft barks and my foster parents let me know they’re there and tell me it’s okay, be quiet, and I go back to sleep otherwise music helps me. I eat twice a day-in the morning and night. I haven’t gotten the hang of toys yet but I’m trying because they seem fun! My foster family says I’ve made a lot of progress and I’m even starting like when they pet me. I’ve been getting braver and more comfortable with being closer to them while they’re up and about but still unsure about a lot of interaction. They like to give me enough space and keep physical affection to shorter intervals so I don’t get too overwhelmed and keep praising my bravery and progress. I get along well with my small foster sibling doggy. I’m unsure how to play with her still but we sniff each other and give each other kisses. She even comes into my kennel to say good morning and goodnight sometimes. I haven’t gotten the opportunity yet to fully interact with dogs my size since being in rescue, but my foster family thinks I would do really well with them and get along with cats, too. I’m looking forward to meeting you!
